Several families are expected to be out of their homes for Thanksgiving this year after a large fire damaged three buildings in Weehawken.
News 12 New Jersey has learned that one of the homes belongs to a member of the North Hudson Regional Fire Department who responded and fought the fire at his own house.
The fire was reported around 9:30 a.m. at 11 Ridgley Place. Authorities said the fire originated in a kitchen and then spread to two neighboring buildings. The original building suffered significant damage, while the other two suffered some damage, according to officials.
"Those three buildings are attached and the fire got in there and started running across the other buildings,” says North Hudson Regional Fire Chief Frank Montagne.
Firefighters evacuated the entire block as a precaution in case the fire spread to even more buildings.
"Last night I got back from college for Thanksgiving break. So I'd just woke up this morning and somebody rang my door bell and told me to get out of the house, there was a fire,” says resident Arianna Almaguer.
Thirteen families were impacted by the blaze. The American Red Cross was on hand to help the families find food and a place to stay until they are allowed back into their homes.
A few firefighters suffered from exhaustion while battling the fire, but they were expected to be OK. Officials say that no other injuries were reported.
