Three employees of an LA Fitness in Secaucus were fired for how they treated two black customers, according to NJ Advanced Media.
The incident on April 16 was recorded on video and posted to Facebook.
Tshyrad Oates said on Facebook that he was working out at the gym and had signed in using a guest pass provided to him by his friend, who is a gym member.
Oates said that an employee came over to him during his workout and told him and his friend that they had to pay or leave. Oates said that they tried to explain to the employee that they had a guest pass and a gym membership.
Eventually the police were called. Officers are seen in the video trying to explain to the LA Fitness employees that the two men did not do anything wrong.
Oates’s video has been shared nearly 50,000 times on Facebook.
NJ.com reports that the gym’s manager and two other employees were fired from the company.
The incident comes not long after two black men were arrested inside a Philadelphia Starbucks. A Starbucks employee called police after the men refused to leave without ordering. The men said that they were waiting to order until their friend arrived.
No formal charges were filed against the men. Starbucks has since apologized and said that all employees will undergo racial sensitivity training.
