In the fifth week of the trial against the men accused of slaying Lesandro "Junior" Guzman-Feliz, tempers flared and gruesome images were displayed in court.
The cross-examination of Michael "Sosa" reyes was postponed to Monday due to Jonaiki Martinez-Estrella's epilepsy.
Leandra Feliz, Junior's mother, stormed out of the courtroom Tuesday while calling Reyes a killer while he was on the witness stand. Defense lawyers were cross-examining Reyes on his plea deal, which the district attorney says will allow for his manslaughter charge to be dropped as long as he truthfully testifies.
Feliz was angered by inconsistencies in his testimony on when he actually belonged to the "Bad Boys" set of the Trinitarios.
Feliz revealed she has decided to watch the rest of the trial on TV from a separate courtroom Thursday when she does attend. The defense had motioned for other arrangements to be made for her viewing so the jury would not be affected by her outbursts.
The defense pounded Reyes, exposing discrepancies in what he testified on in front of a grand jury last June. Reyes previously testified Junior threw up a gang sign when approached by the Trinitarios, and is now denying he saw that.
He said through a translator, "I want you to understand that everything that I said mistakenly was because of everything going on. I was confused."
The prosecution rested its case on Friday, but not before leaving a lasting impression on the jury with photos from Junior's autopsy report. A doctor from the office of the chief medical examiner testified on Junior's fatal neck injury.
"It's possible if he was brought to the hospital earlier than he was he could have survived," the doctor says.
The defense has the opportunity Monday to call witnesses if they choose before leading off closing arguments.
