Jewish community in the Bronx sending thoughts to families affected by violence in Israel
Members of the Jewish community in the Bronx are coming together to send their thoughts to four Middle East families who have buried their sons in recent weeks.
Israeli teens Eyal Yifrach, Gilad Shaar and Naftali Frenkel were abducted while hitchhiking in the West Bank in June. Their bodies were not found until nearly three weeks later, buried in the city of Hebron.
Arab teenager Mohammed Abu Khdeir was then found burned to death after disappearing on July 2, leading many to believe the killing was revenge for the murders of the three Israeli teens.
Rabbi Avi Weiss started a movement at the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale, and now other synagogues are joining in to send their condolences to all four families affected by the recent violence. Members of congregations are signing their names on and sending their thoughts through cards.
Weiss will deliver the cards to the victims' families in mid-August.
Meanwhile, fighting continues to escalate between Israelis and Palestinians despite a cease-fire proposed by Egypt. Israeli police confirm that they have charged three people in connection with the kidnapping and murder of Abu Khdeir, but say there have been no arrests made in the deaths of the Israeli teens.
