Islandia residents plan to fight proposed mini-casino
Village of Islandia residents say they are gearing up for a fight against a proposed plan to put a mini-casino in their backyard.
As News 12 has reported, Suffolk OTB wants to bring a 1,000 video slot machine facility to the Marriott Hotel in Islandia.
Opponents of the casino say their battle plans include several petition drives, and one of them can be found on MoveOn.org.
The Hauppauge School Board sent a letter to the Islandia mayor expressing its strong opposition to a casino near any of the district's schools. Residents have also discussed calling on the village to let them vote on the matter.
Suffolk OTB had wanted to build the casino next to the Long Island Expressway in Medford. That plan was scrapped after months of protests from Medford homeowners. Hauppauge-area residents say they will be sending the same message.
The Islandia Village Board was supposed to vote on the casino's permit on Tuesday, but that meeting was canceled.
Calls placed by News 12 to the village mayor and Suffolk OTB were not immediately returned.
