BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - After lost games and injuries, the New York Islanders sent goalie Rick DiPietro to the minor leagues last week.
DiPietro, who is under a nearly $68 million contract, was supposed to be a star of the National Hockey League (NHL) team, but instead, after losing games and suffering multiple injuries, he was demoted to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the minor league affiliate of the Islanders, playing for the American Hockey League (AHL), in Bridgeport, Conn.
“I feel like someone ripped out my heart and stuck a knife in it and lit it on fire and flushed it down the toilet,” says DiPietro. “It was tough.”
He admitted the issues he experienced have led him to contemplate suicide. He also said that he doesn’t know if the demotion will bring about the end of his Islanders career.
