President Donald Trump made a public statement Wednesday following the Iranian missile strikes that targeted two military bases in Iraq that house U.S. service members.
No Americans were harmed in the attack, and if Iran doesn't strike again the president said tensions between the two nations could begin to cool off.

“Iran appears to be standing down, which is a good thing for all parties concerned, and a very good thing for the world,” said Trump.

Instead of responding with military force, President Trump said new sanctions will be leveled against the Islamic republic.
"Iran must abandon its nuclear ambitions," said Trump.
Rep. Lee Zeldin says that diplomacy and sanctions should be the first choice, but he's also cautious about making a deal with the Iranian regime.
“Any type of agreement with Iran ever has to be fully verifiable. You cannot trust them,” says Zeldin.

Counterterrorism expert Denis Monette says Iran has operatives all over the world, and Americans should remain alert.

“We still have to be careful of their proxies who they may endorse to commit some acts, or who may act on their own. Hamas, Hezbollah, Al Shabob, some of those groups, while under their control, are not under their control at times,” says Monette.
Long Islanders are also reacting to the president's remarks, with many hoping his speech will help lead to a peaceful outcome.

“It could have been horrible, and I'm very happy that everything turned out to be OK so far,” says Eleanor Gibbs, of Jericho.

As President Trump closed his remarks, he opened the door for the possibility of peace, sending a message to the Iranian government and its people.

“We want you to have a future, and a great future, one that you deserve. One of prosperity at home and harmony with the nations of the world. The United States is ready to embrace peace with all who seek it,” said Trump.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand wrote in a statement, "This crisis was unnecessary and avoidable. Without seeking congressional authorization or presenting a clear strategy, President Trump brought us to the brink of war with Iran...Make no mistake -- President Trump has made us less safe."
