Sources say a man used a smoke bomb before assaulting a victim in a Morris Heights home invasion Tuesday.

Investigators say a 58-year-old woman was exiting her apartment when she saw smoke filling her hallway. That's when police say the suspect displayed a gun and pushed her back into her apartment.

The suspect then hit her in the face with the gun and demanded money, according to police. They say the man made off with some of her property.

Neighbors in the West 175th Street and Grand Avenue apartment building were evacuated Tuesday due to the smoke.

Residents say the building was safer when it had a security guard in the past.

The victim was taken to New York City Health + Hospitals/Lincoln to be treated for facial injuries. Police who responded were also taken to area hospitals for smoke inhalation.

There have been no arrests.
