Bellmore residents are concerned because they say a road close to Mepham High School is dangerous.
Residents who live and work along Newbridge Road in Bellmore say it is nightmare that has resulted in crashes and injuries.
"I have seen so many accidents, so many cars and trucks barreling down the road, it's just been crazy," says Mary Scinto.
Scinto says it is especially concerning where Newbridge Road and Elbert Avenue meet. That's because at the end of Elbert Avenue is Mepham High School and students drive, walk and bike back and forth to school. Scinto says she once saw a student hit by a vehicle.
"I actually saw him get hit on his bike," Scinto says. "He was a very lucky boy, there have been deaths on this street."
As an EMT, John Scalesi, who lives a few doors down, has seen how dangerous the road is. That is why he put together a petition for a safety study.
Scalesi says despite the 400 signatures and pleas to Nassau County officials to do something, nothing has been done and the situation just gets worse.
Once school is let out, the corner gets even more dangerous with buses exiting, students trying to leave and traffic building up on Newbridge Road.
Nassau County police say stats show there are few crashes at the location.
News 12 reached out to Nassau County officials who said they are looking into the situation.
