More than 1 million boxes of fruits and vegetables were delivered to the Hunts Point Terminal Produce Market Monday on what employees say is the market's busiest day of the year.
"This week is stressful," says distributor Matthew D'Arrigo. "When Wednesday rolls around, you're ready to have turkey and not worry about selling cranberries and yams."
The market's 30-person security staff will serve as traffic control for the market during the rush. The store estimates about 1,500 trucks will make drop-offs by Thursday.
D'Arrigo expects the market to make $30 million in retail and $15 million in wholesale for the week. Those sales are about 33 percent higher than usual, according to store representatives.
The Hunts Point market is the largest market for fresh fruit and vegetables in the country. It serves approximately 18 million residents in the metropolitan area.
