A Huntington Station woman has been indicted on attempted murder and conspiracy charges in connection with an alleged murder-for-hire plot.
Elsy Rodriguez-Garcia, 25, allegedly agreed to pay a hitman $6,000 to kill former stepdaughter and mother-in-law. The child is 5 years old.
Suffolk County DA Timothy Sini says that Rodriguez-Garcia had been communicating with a supposed co-conspirator on WhatsApp to inquire about hiring a hitman. He says she stated that she would not send the payment without proof of the killings.
“She wanted them to disappear, so her husband could spend more time with her and her child,” says Sini.
Police say Rodriguez-Garcia then sent photos of her former relatives to the would-be hitman.
"The photo she sent of the little girl was the child's kindergarten graduation photo,” says Sini.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart says that Rodriguez-Garcia’s ex-husband then appeared at the 3 Precinct and reported that he was told by a relative that his ex-wife had been speaking about wanting to hire a hitman to kill his two family members.
Hart says that Rodriguez-Garcia incorrectly believed the two would be visiting Ecuador and suggested that the hitman commit the murder there, in what would appear to be a robbery.
Police were able to investigate the plot and went on to intercept it by sending photos depicting fake proof of the death of the young girl and woman, to which Rodriguez-Garcia allegedly responded that she would send payment.
The 25-year-old was arrested the next day and now faces 25 years to life.
"We're always gonna stay one step ahead of the criminals,” says Sini.
Rodriguez-Garcia’s lawyer now says it was her brother-in-law who duped her into the murder-for-hire plot.
