Town of Huntington officials on Friday unveiled a new downtown shuttle service called Qwik Ride.
"It's an app you can download on your phone," says Huntington Town Supervisor Chad Luppinacci. "You can park in any parking lot in the outskirts of town and call for a ride and the shuttle service will bring you to your destination in town."
Huntington resident Sarah Starr says the lack of parking is a daily frustration. And David Enden, of Kings Park, says the parking problems prevent him from visiting downtown Huntington.
Jack Palladino, owner of Christopher's Restaurant, says he's been pushing for a solution to the parking problem for 20 years.
The service runs from 3:30 p.m. to midnight Sunday through Wednesday and from 3:30 p.m. to 4 a.m. Thursday to Saturday.
It runs year-round, consists of five electric vehicles, is free for riders and is paid for by sponsor advertising on the vehicles.
Town officials say they're still studying plans to build a public parking garage, but the shuttle service will provide immediate relief to the parking problem for now.
