Hofstra students are mourning the death of a 19-year-old student and member of the men's lacrosse team.
Officials at Hofstra say Joe Ferriso, of Copiague, died Saturday from injuries suffered in a car accident.
Police say Ferriso was driving southbound on Great Neck Road in Copiague at around 7:30 a.m. on New Year's Day when his 2014 Jeep veered off the road and struck a tree. Ferriso was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he died Saturday. Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
A makeshift memorial continues to grow at the scene of the crash.
Hofstra lacrosse coach Seth Tierney remembered Ferriso as a great teammate, an over-achiever and a wonderful person.
Ferriso's wake will be Wednesday and Thursday at D'Andrea Brothers Funeral Home in Copiague. His funeral is Friday at Our Lady of Assumption Church in Copiague.
