A fast-moving, three-alarm fire tore through a dozen homes in a North Brunswick condo complex Saturday night, and some heroic rescues were caught on video during the blaze.
The fire sparked around 10:30 p.m. on Albury Way in the Governor's Point Complex.
Port Authority Officer John Shaughenessy opened the door of his condo last night to see intense flames coming from an adjacent building. He sprang into action alongside North Brunswick police officers, who had raced to the scene.
In a moment captured on cellphone video, Shaughnessy, the officers and bystanders are seen rescuing two children and their grandparents ahead of the raging flames.
Out of 15 residents in a dozen units ravaged by the fire, none suffered serious injuries.
"At the end of the day, it's just the most important thing to me is everybody got out," Shaughnessy says.
The three-story building housed 12 units and has been determined to be uninhabitable by officials. Houses were torn down as early as Sunday morning.
A total of 80 firefighters fought the flames from inside the complex, but a dangerously weakened floor meant firefighters had to be pulled out for their own safety. The fire was eventually brought under control.
All residents have been accounted for and no serious injuries were reported. Firefighters were also able to save some pets.
North Brunswick and County officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
