Heavy rains pound LI, cause street flooding
Localized flooding made for some scary scenarios Friday as a monster rainstorm soaked Long Island.
In Farmingdale, firefighters say floodwaters stranded a couple in their car near Merrits Road and Fulton Street. They were pulled to safety through their sun roof and into a waiting payloader.
The storm also created a waterfall at the Long Island Rail Road station in Great Neck, stunning commuters.
At Hi Hook Bait & Tackle on New York Avenue in Huntington, the owner says he took on about a foot of water in the morning, causing $15,000 in damage.
"I lost everything along the whole bottom of the store," says owner Robert Berry. "The tile came up from the floor, the epoxy paint came up from the floor, the bathroom door is destroyed -- it's all warped from the water."
Berry adds that an $18 million state project was supposed to prevent flooding on his street.
In a statement, the Department of Transportation said that project significantly cut down on the amount of flooding in the area and also offered an explanation for Friday's floods.
"The unusual circumstances of the high amount of rain this morning, combined with high tide, the low elevation of the road, and amount of runoff from surrounding local roads presented a unique situation," the statement reads.
