A group of protesters stood outside in Yonkers today to make their final pleas toward a possible marijuana legalization.

All of the advocates talked on points that addressed criminal justice reform, education and public health, and how legalization could help.

Several law enforcement agencies - including the New York State Sheriffs’ Association – are against the legislation.

They say it will lead to public safety issues on the road, like ‘drugged driving.’

“We need the government to regulate,” Tasha Young, a community activist, said on the legislation, “and to help educate the public about the different potency levels.”

News 12 reached out to Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Sen. Shelley Mayer for comment on whether a vote will be held but has not heard back. The state Legislature’s session ends June 19.
