A national program aimed at preventing bullying, drug use, violence and gangs in schools is hitting Long Island.

The G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) program, was in Oak Park Elementary School in Bay Shore Tuesday where Suffolk Corrections Officer Michael Newman taught children how to control their anger.

Officer Newman says one of the overall goals of the six-week program is to teach students about themselves and how to learn from bad decisions.

The Suffolk Sheriff's Office teaches the G.R.E.A.T. program in nine districts at 51 schools. Instructors from the sheriff's office also teach the program in El Salvador, Columbia, Nicaragua and Ecuador.
