Tenants of an apartment complex in Great Neck rallied today with hopes of holding onto their homes in the face of eviction.

Tenants of Academy Gardens, which has 40 rent-stabilized units, say the building's owner is looking to tear it down and replace it with condo units. Some of the tenants have called their apartments home for decades.

The tenants say they are working families who are mostly Hispanic and African-American. They claim the complex's management has already forced out some families through harassment, a claim that was disputed by a management agent.

Under the law, the management must offer the tenants a stipend of up to $150,000, but the tenants say that sum is taxable. They add that there's no other affordable options in the village or in Nassau County.
