ROSLYN - Several Long Island hospitals are at risk of losing federal funding after patient reviews painted them in a poor light.

According to government surveys obtained by Newsday, most Long Islanders are satisfied with medical care in local hospitals, but are not pleased with their overall patient experience.

Catholic Health Services runs six hospitals on the Island, two of which, including St. Joseph's, did not fare well. "Dollars are important because they translate into what we can put back into the system in order to improve the system," says Joel Yohai, chief medical officer for Catholic Health Services.

The system of basing reimbursements on patient surveys began last year, according to a spokeswoman for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
