Islanders fans are loving life now that the team has advanced to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. And many of them are doing something big Saturday to show their love for the team.
Matt Kammerer has been an Islanders fan for about 30 years and a Coliseum usher for 19.
"I always say it's the best part-time job you could have," he says.
Like many fans, he's watching the Isles win in Toronto and thinking, "I wish there was a way to storm the border, invade Canada and show our support."
Great thought, but also a no-no in the pandemic as the Canadian border is closed.
So he thought of a very expensive idea -- hire a plane to fly over Toronto with a banner that says, "Let's go Islanders."
With a price of about $3,500, Kammerer thought, ‘Maybe this is something I can start a GoFundMe campaign for.'
"Then it just exploded," he said.
24 hours later, Matt didn't just reach his goal, but exceeded it.
"When I woke up in the morning, the thing was just flying," he said. "No pun intended!"
A few of his buddies, like Eric Janssen and Dan Higgins, chipped in.
"It's definitely, I don't know about kookiest, but it's definitely one of the most original ideas I've seen in a long time," said Higgins.
At this time, Kammerer has raised more than $4,500 in all, which is good enough for two hours of flight time Saturday to show the Islanders that when it comes to the fans’ love, not even the sky is the limit.
