MASSAPEQUA - Family, friends and colleagues said goodbye today to Nassau County Presiding Officer Peter Schmitt at Saint Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Massapequa.

The veteran lawmaker died of a heart attack last Wednesday while in a meeting with Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano at the Legislature building.
The 62-year-old Republican was one of the original members of the county Legislature when it was formed in 1995.

Many politicians from both sides of the aisle spoke at Schmitt’s funeral, describing his softer side.

“He was a very warm person, despite his gruff exterior. A family man number one,” said state Sen. Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre).

“I knew the other side of Peter and I knew how much we would have fun together -- his personality and his sense of humor and his love of the Yankees which we both shared,” remembered Legislator Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury).

County Executive Ed Mangano set the special election for Schmitt’s vacant seat on Nov. 6 which coincides with the general election.
