Fire officials in Freehold demonstrated just how dangerous dried out Christmas trees can be in homes without fire prevention equipment.

Crews showed two living rooms with a burning tree side by side, one with working sprinklers and one without.

They say sprinklers can make a significant difference in these types of fires, especially this time of year.

Michael Wilson, of the Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board, says, "Minutes matter with fires, with home fires, so the sprinklers are going to ensure that everybody in the home can get out and our firefighters that need to respond to the call are safe when they arrive on scene."

State Fire Commission Chairman Kevin Krushinksi urges everyone to constantly water their tree and make sure it's away from a heating source.

Officials say trees should be watered daily. They say adding ice cubes could help keep it hydrated as well.
