An NFL star is hoping to raise money for some United States veterans by putting his dogs up for adoption.
Odell Beckham Jr. of the New York Giants is putting up 10 canary mastiff puppies up for adoption to raise money for the veterans. The puppies are now at the Green Leaf Pet Resort in Millstone.
“When Odell posted the litter on his network, within 10 seconds we got 37 responses,” says Green Leaf owner Shelly Leibowitz. “Approximately three days later, we now have over 500 responses.”
A portion of the money from the adoption fees will go to a Louisiana group called Paws, where inmates take shelter dogs and train them to be service dogs for veterans.
“Louisiana is Odell’s home state, so it was very dear to him to be able to find this organization and have them be a part of the puppies that we have raised,” Leibowitz says.
Green Leaf is now looking for the right families to adopt the dogs, which can get up to 140 pounds. They need a lot of exercise.
"We want to make sure that people can afford the dogs obviously and that they will go to the right homes,” Leibowitz says. “But we also want to give a substantial amount of money to the system that we think is just super."
It costs $10,000 to adopt one of the puppies. Leibowitz says he hopes their donation to Louisiana will make a big difference.
“I don't think that the money could go to a better place. To help our war vets, how you could go wrong?” Leibowitz asks.
Green Leaf Pet Resort is still taking applications for the dogs. They say they're hoping to start interviews next week and have the puppies placed in homes soon after. More information can be found on the resort’s website.
