BETHPAGE - A water well in Bethpage has been shut down due to fears of a dangerous chemical.

One well has been found to contain high levels of radium. Superintendent of the Bethpage Water District Mike Boufis says not to be concerned because the radium levels have not exceeded the maximum level allowed by the Environmental Protection Agency and the State of New York.

Boufis says the levels were high enough for the water district to choose to take precautionary measures to shut down the water well, which has been off since January.

The water district says the contamination may be emanating from the Northrop Grumman at the Bethpage Community Park.

Boufis says the water pumped out to residents is safe to use for bathing and drinking.
