A fan-favorite competitive eater from Torrington is preparing for Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Contest - which is still planned to take place with social distancing restrictions.
You could call Nick Wehry and Miki Sudo the "first couple of competitive eating."
"We met two years ago on the Fourth of July at the gym of the hotel where they put us up for the hot dog eating contest, but we started dating a year ago," says Sudo.
This weekend, they're headed back to where it all began. Sudo will be the one to step up to the plates on July 4, but Wehry is still putting in the training with her.
"That’s our Super Bowl, our WrestleMania, our World Series," says Wehry.
The two are preparing by eating 90 hot dogs, plated contest-style with a 10-minute time limit. Sudo has won the women's title every year since 2014.
"So on the Mount Rushmore of competitive eating, the Nathan’s stage has kind of cemented her place there," says Wehry.
Sudo's personal best is 41 hot dogs, but she's hungrier for more than a win. She hopes to best the women's record of 45 hot dogs, something she's done plenty of times at home.
If the training session News 12 witnessed is any indication, she is on her way. Sudo finished 50 hot dogs with time to spare.
The annual event will be held indoors, without a crowd and with fewer competitors. It will be broadcast live on ESPN at noon Saturday.
