Family of limo crash victim sues county, town
The family of a young woman killed in a limousine crash last month in Cutchogue has filed a lawsuit on her behalf.
The family of Lauren Baruch filed the suit Wednesday morning against Suffolk County and the Town of Southold.
As previously reported, the 24-year-old Baruch and three other women were killed when their limousine was T-boned at the intersection of Depot Road and County Route 48 in July.
According to the lawsuit, Suffolk County and the Town of Southold failed to keep the roadway safe with a traffic light or appropriate traffic signs, despite both knowing that U-turns at the intersection were "unreasonably dangerous." It accuses the county and town of negligence, carelessness and recklessness.
Vivian Hinton, of Cutchogue, says she and her neighbors have been complaining to the Town of Southold for years about the dangerous intersection. "If they keep leaving it the same, it's going to happen again," she says.
Other residents living near the intersection say that a traffic signal scheduled to be installed this fall will most likely not prevent similar tragedies from occurring. They recommend a left-turn signal and signs banning large vehicles such as limousines from making U-turns.
News 12 reached out to Suffolk and the Town of Southold, but both could not comment on pending litigation.
