Family grateful for 'angels' after fire ripped through their home
People and businesses from across Long Island are coming together to brighten the holidays for a single mother and her children after their home was destroyed by a fire Friday.
As News 12 has reported, flames tore through the home on Schenk Drive in Shirley early Friday morning. Kim Cetin and seven of her children were in the home when the fire sparked.
Cetin says she was in the shower when she smelled smoke, and she raced to get all of her children out of the home safely. She caught her 4-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter as they jumped from a second-floor landing.
The family members were treated at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. Their home was completely gutted by the flames, and they've been put up at a local hotel. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Toys for Tots, PTRC of Jericho and Baseline Health are among the organizations working to bring Cetin and her children a bit of holiday cheer. Santa was on hand Saturday as the family was presented with gifts and toys.
The family is still trying to come to grips with the fact that their home full of memories is destroyed, but they say they are touched by the support they've received.
"There are angels out there that came through to us," Cetin says. "Me and my kids can't be more grateful and love you guys so much."
Cetin adds that the greatest gift is that her family is safe and together this holiday.
Brookhaven Memorial Hospital says it's facilitating donations for the family. More information can be found on the hospital's Facebook page.
