Family and friends of a man struck and killed on his motorcycle by an NYPD SUV in July gathered together Thursday evening to call for justice.
The incident happened on July 25, when an NYPD SUV heading to a 911 call traveled through the intersection at Metropolitan Avenue and Driggs Avenue.
Their vehicle hit motorcyclist Delroy Morris, knocking him to the ground. Morris was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Loved ones of Morris spoke out outside the 90th Precinct in Williamsburg after meeting with New York State Attorney General Leticia James' office about what they say was a wrongful death.
According to police, the police vehicle was using its lights and sirens while it went through the intersection, but Morris' supporters say only the lights were on. They claim that officer Angelo Martino had a disregard for safety and Morris had no warning that the car was coming.
Morris' sister, Sandra Bracy, says, "We all lost Delroy due to NYPD failing to take one second to stop, that split-second would have changed the whole narrative of this conversation…We understand what happened was an accident and accidents are things that could've been avoided if handled differently."
The family and attorney Sanford Rubenstein say they want the officer fired and convicted of murder, and that they're confident there will be an independent investigation by the attorney general.
