The city's new speed camera law is now in effect. 

The city Department of Transportation added five times more speed cameras in school zones throughout the city. The DOT will have speed cameras in 750 school zones total once the mission is complete.

The new law allowed cameras to be placed within a quarter-mile radius around schools.

Along with additional cameras, the cameras are aimed at catching drivers going over the speed limit of 25 mph between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. all year long. The old only enforced the speed limit during school hours.

Officials say the changes are in an effort to continue to decrease pedestrian deaths in accordance with Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Vision Zero plan.

The DOT says that speed camera in school zones reduce speeding by 63 percent. Anyone caught speeding can expect a $50 ticket in the mail.
