MANHASSET - The latest adaptation of “The Great Gatsby” hits theaters this weekend, and to gear up News 12’s Elisa DiStefano took a fashion trip back in time to the roaring 20s.
The movie, inspired by the novel of the same name, is set in the 20s on the Gold Coast. Sparkling style and distinction are a big part of the costumes in the film. For the ladies, it’s all about flapper fashion. A dress from J. Mendel at the Americana Manhasset is just perfect. And if you want to dress like Daisy Buchanan, played by Carey Mulligan in this film, make sure to drape yourself in diamonds and pearls. The jewels featured in the movie are from Tiffany’s, including cufflinks worn by Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role of Jay Gatsby.
And we can’t forget the men’s style. Brooks Brothers manufactured more than 500 outfits for the movie inspired by the company’s 1920s archives. According to Joe Dente from Brooks Brothers, author F. Scott Fitzgerald was a Brooks Brothers costumer and referred to the company as “the purveyor of fine clothing for gentlemen of distinction."
Brooks Brothers also created a Gatsby-inspired collection that is in stores now. The collection is a modern interpretation of the clothing from the 20s. Pronounced lapels, novelty collars and bow ties are just some of the items symbolic of the Gatsby era.
