WOODBURY - It’s the end of an era. As singing competition American Idol crowns its last winner, News 12 Long Island’s Elisa DiStefano took a trip down memory lane and caught up with some contestants from Long Island.

Season 10 third-place winner Jax hails from Atlantic Beach, while season five’s Kevin Covais, of Levittown, came in 11th.

In season four, Smithtown native Joe Murena made it to the top 10, but Carrie Underwood was crowned the winner. “Looking back now that it’s ending, I realize how much of an impact it had on my life,” says Murena. “I’ve been given opportunities that some singers dream about.”

Meanwhile, Medford’s Leah Laurenti made it to Hollywood twice, in seasons nine and 10. “Even though I didn’t win, I can say it changed my life,” says Laurenti. “I don’t really know how much exposure I would have gotten if it wasn’t for American Idol.”

And Merrick’s Robbie Rosen made it to the top 16 in season 10 at just 16 years old. “It’s bitter sweet,” Rosen says, of the ending of the show.
