Elmont residents rallied on Monday against a proposal to build a new soccer stadium near Belmont Park.

The 25,000-seat stadium would be home to the recently revived New York Cosmos. People who live in the area say they want to use the 36-acre site in a way other than a stadium that can propel the community forward.

In a statement to News 12, New York Cosmos COO Erik Stover says the project does not only include a stadium. It will include a multi-use complex with space for retail, a hotel, restaurants and neighborhood parks. Stover says the project will bring in about 3,000 permanent jobs.
