Driver admits being on drugs during fatal Shirley crash
Police say one person was killed after a man driving under the influence of drugs caused a four-car crash in Shirley.
Suffolk County police say Kendell Owens, 31, of Middle Island, was traveling eastbound on Montauk Highway when his car struck another vehicle driven by Richard Garcia, 45, of Shirley, who was driving northbound on William Floyd Parkway. Officials say Garcia later died at the hospital.
Several people in other vehicles were injured, but they are expected to be OK.
Owens was arrested and charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and with leaving the scene of an incident without reporting a fatality. Police say Owens took off on foot, but was arrested a short time later.
While being transported to court, Owens said that he was on PCP when he allegedly ran a red light and caused the four-car crash.
"I was scared they were going to hurt me," said Owens. "I love my daughter and I want to tell her happy birthday. I'm so sorry to the family, so sorry to the family. I'm a good kid. I have four children."
In court, it was revealed Owens has a prior arrest history. His bond was set Wednesday at $250,000 cash.
Officials said he could face more than seven years in prison depending on the results of his blood exam.
