Donation by Yankees allows Bronx church to reopen soup kitchen
A robbery forced a Bronx church to close its soup kitchen, but now a large donation by the Yankees will allow the church to re-open its program.
Reverend Dupree says thousands of dollars was stolen from the Baptist church at 153rd street and he had no choice but to close the soup kitchen. But days later, the reverend says the church received a $20,000 check from the Yankees. A Yankee spokesperson says when the organization heard about the robbery, it wanted to reach out and help the church continue their community service programs.
In addition to monetary donations, a nearby construction company is helping the church tighten security by installing a steel door for free. The reverend says he hopes he will be able to reopen the soup kitchen soon, but first he has to make sure the necessary security precautions are put in place.
Reverend Dupree says police are still investigating the robbery.
