Doctors at Stony Brook Children's Hospital say a baby born two months ago with his intestines outside his body is doing very well.
The boy, Christian, was born with gastroschisis - a birth defect of the abdominal wall where the baby’s intestines are on the outside of the body through the navel.
The boy’s parents, Nykki Hunter and Chris Rojas, have been hoping for the best.
“I've just been trying to keep myself together,” says Hunter. “…Every time I feel like I want to break down…I just realize he's the one going through it. I just have to watch."
Hunter says the baby was diagnosed when she was 12 weeks pregnant. While doctors say the condition is pretty common, Christian had a complication. His intestines were twisted, cutting off the blood supply.
The baby has already had multiple surgeries to put his intestines back inside. He's in the neonatal intensive care unit at Stony Brook Children's Hospital.
Nykki and Chris hope to bring their newborn home next month. The family wants to raise awareness about the condition and also money for the baby's medical care. They are hosting a fundraiser on Saturday in Yaphank.
