District: Unplanned visit by rapper, Mount Vernon mayor resulted in damage to school
An unplanned and unauthorized visit to Mount Vernon High School by the mayor and a rapper on Friday afternoon turned into a melee.
Rapper Fat Boy SSE was in the city Friday because Mayor Richard Thomas had named him "Mayor for the Day."
Fat Boy SSE, who has millions of social media followers, made a number of stops, including one at the high school.
Video clips from the school showed the rapper with cash, students chasing him and the visit spiraling out of control.
The school district confirmed that there was damage done inside the school and that Mayor Thomas will need permission from the superintendent in order to visit a school.
Mount Vernon police said school resource officers stepped in to restore order.
In a statement, the Mount Vernon City School District superintendent said, "I am hopeful that Mayor Thomas will acknowledge his error in judgment, issue an apology and accept full responsibility for any fallout from this event. I am sure Mayor Thomas had good intentions, but this impromptu visit with Fat Boy was anything but good, particularly during midterms which had to be rescheduled."
The mayor's office hasn't responded to News 12's request for comment, but Tyriq Kimbrough - known professionally as FatBoy SSE- says he was was just trying to show the students love and didn't realize he interrupted exams. He says in hindsight, he wouldn't change anything.
