Law students from Puerto Rico who were displaced by Hurricane Maria are set to attend classes on Long Island.

Touro Law School in Central Islip is welcoming the students from Puerto Rico, where college campuses were among the buildings devastated by the storm. The displaced students haven't been able to attend class since Maria struck.

Touro College was prepared to take as many as 35 law students from the University of Puerto Rico School of Law; nine students opted to participate. They are all second- and third-year law students.

Touro is opening its classrooms and offering housing to the students. A special, eight-week program has been created with credits that can transfer back to the students’ school in Puerto Rico when it reopens.

As they head to their first classes, the students tell News 12 their minds are on the devastation back home. Most of the students are from the capital of San Juan, but some are from remote towns where they say relief efforts have been slow.

"There are a lot of people on the island that need a lot of help and they aren't receiving it," says student Astrid Rivera.
