Diana Paniagua charged with abandoning baby boy in Mott Haven
A Bronx mother was arraigned Tuesday night after police say she abandoned her toddler in Mott Haven.
According to investigators, 29-year-old Diana Paniagua was taken into custody after a truck driver noticed her little boy, Jayden, in a stroller on Rider Avenue and 141st Street at around 5:30 a.m. Monday. He was more than 4 miles from the family's home in Soundview.
The child, who is around 2 years old, was evaluated at Lincoln Hospital, and the Administration for Children's Services has placed him in foster care.
Paniagua walked into the courtroom Tuesday night wiping her eyes and continued to cry as she stood in front of the judge.
Paniagua has been charged with reckless endangerment and abandonment of a child. The judge set Paniagua's bail at $1,000 and set an order of protection for her from her child. The judge also set an order of protection for the person who is credited with spotting the boy and calling police.
The judge explained that Paniagua will have to go through an evaluation to see if she is fit to eventually get her son back.
Neighbors say Paniagua adores her son and was always with him. They also said the father worked long hours as a truck driver, but left his job to be closer to his family.
Paniagua will be back in court Wednesday morning.
