A medical emergency delayed jury selection for five defendants in the Lesandro “Junior” Guzman Feliz murder case, effectively pushing back opening statements in the trial.
Court officers were seated inside the courtroom waiting to escort the defendants in, but they never made it. News 12 was told Jonaiki Martinez-Estrella, one of five men accused of first-degree murder, became ill inside the holding pen.
Estrella is accused of stabbing Junior in the neck outside of a Belmont bodega last June. He and four others are on trial for first-degree murder.
An additional nine men are also charged in the case with second-degree murder. They will be tried separately.
Last week, Martinez-Estrella turned down a court plea deal of 23 years to life.
The court has its 12 jurors for the trial, as well as one alternate. It needs at least five more, according to the judge, before the trial can move forward. The entire jury is made up of women aside from one man.
The selection process will resume on Thursday, which was the tentative date for opening statements to begin.
