Defeated candidate: School board vote was a sham
A candidate who ran for the Uniondale School Board is calling for a new election after accusing the district of voter fraud.
Former candidate Terenna Williams lost last month's election by just 14 votes.
A complaint to the State Education Department filed Friday morning alleges the election included irregularities in voting and absentee ballots. It also accuses school personnel of using district phones and computers to send emails, which is not permitted under state law.
One of the emails purportedly sent out by the teachers' union urged voters to "Please re-elect Emerson Mott and James Sharpe."
Williams and her attorney also say they inspected voting booths after the election, and found three out of six were not sealed as required by election rules.
In a statement, the district said, "It is the practice of the Uniondale Union Free School District not to comment on any pending litigation and any appeals to the New York state Commissioner of Education."
The district has until Monday to issue a formal response to Williams' complaint.
The state Department of Education will make its recommendation later this year.
