As of Tuesday, New York State has at least 173 cases of coronavirus - most linked to a cluster in Westchester County's New Rochelle.
A 69-year-old man in Bergen County, New Jersey, with underlying health issues is the first patient to die due to coronavirus complications in the tri-state area. So far, there are no reported deaths in New York state, but Gov. Andrew Cuomo says 31 new patients have tested positive for coronavirus across the state since Monday.
At least 16 of those new cases are in New York City, with 11 of them confirmed between 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., according to Mayor Bill de Blasio. That brings the total cases in the state to 173 - 36 of those cases are in the five boroughs.
Mayor Bill de Blasio says 30 people in the city are under mandatory quarantine and 1,980 are in voluntary isolation. City Council Speaker Corey Johnson also postponed his State of the City address, which was scheduled for Thursday, March 12, out of an abundance of caution.
Mayor Bill de Blasio says the numbers will continue to change as there are hundreds of tests being performed daily. He is asking for the FDA to expedite its approval of automated testing at private labs, while also requesting 300,000 masks from the federal government.
The mayor also gave an update on the Brooklyn EMT worker who tested positive for the virus on Monday. He appears to have contracted the virus from his girlfriend, who is a flight attendant.
The city will also be monitoring cruise ship terminals in Brooklyn and Manhattan. New York Road Runners canceled the United Airlines New York City Half Marathon that was scheduled for Sunday, March 15.
During a news conference, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the deployment of the National Guard to a New Rochelle containment area.
Cuomo says the guard will help distribute food to quarantined families and sanitize the area of coronavirus. Schools will close for two weeks starting Friday in the New Rochelle area as well.
Globally, there are more than 115,000 and the death toll is more than 4,000.
