Connecticut parents have begun back-to-school shopping for their children as the new school year approaches.

While shoppers at a Staples in Norwalk have begun buying supplies, managers say lines will get much worse in a week. They expect up to 1,500 customers a day through mid-September.

One mother told News 12 that she spent $62 on her son's supplies.

According to a National Retail Federation survey, families with children in elementary through high school plan to spend an average of $684.79. That includes supplies, clothing and electronics.

The Staples manager says the retailer this year put up its back-to-school displays in June -- earlier than in past years.

Staples will have extended hours from Aug. 20 to Sept. 9 for last-minute shoppers.
