From long lines at airports to busy roads, holiday travel can be stressful, especially when traveling with children.
AAA predicts that 107 million Americans will take various modes of transportation from Dec. 23 to Jan. 1, with many being parents with children in tow.
Tracy Noble, of AAA, said the secret to a smooth trip is getting children involved.
“Ask them what they’d like to do. Let them pack their own carry on or back pack. That way they feel like they’re involved,” she said.
Noble also suggested letting the children pick the music, even if it’s not your preferred soundtrack, and pack distractions.
Psychologists recommend coloring books for children six and under, while older children may enjoy playing a video game or watching a movie.
Noble advised that if driving, try to not travel too far in one day.
“Make a plan to stop every few hours. Get everyone out of the vehicle. Let everyone stretch. Let the kids run around,” she said.
Finally, experts recommend leaving early in the morning when taking a family trip. They say not only will the children be less tired, airfares will be cheaper if traveling by plane.
