A crackdown on counterfeit vape products is underway in Nassau County.

Investigators from the Department of Consumer Affairs conducted a sweep of 60 locations throughout Baldwin, Freeport, Mineola, Oceanside and Rockville Centre, where they found 15 violations. It was all part of what they called Operation Clear the Air.

Specifically, investigators say they found some shops that were selling electronic cigarette products slapped with fake stickers, saying the pods were approved for sales in the United States, when they were not.

"We consider the sale of these products to be an unconscionable and deceptive trade practices for any vendors who are out selling the altered product," says Nassau Consumer Affairs Commissioner Greg May. "Where they're taking the Canadian warning label label and altering it to make it look like it's the American-approved label."

Each violation carries a maximum fine of up to $5,000. Investigators did not identify specific shops because the investigation is ongoing.
