Students and their supporters in Connecticut and around the country will take to the streets Saturday in solidarity with the March For Our Lives rally to end gun violence.
The March For Our Lives movement kicked off following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that killed 17 people last month. Since then, a wave of student activism and community partnerships have spread across the nation. Thousands are expected to march on Washington Saturday as part of the event.
Sibling marches are planned throughout Connecticut.
A group of about 30 students from Harding High School in Bridgeport will be attending a sibling march in Hartford, an event that’s expected to draw thousands of people pushing for tougher gun laws.
“I'm walking tomorrow to be surrounded by people who want the same future,” says Harding High School junior Nathaniel Perez. “Teenagers who see that if we don't do something, then nothing's going to change.”
Harding High School, like other schools across the nation, held a walkout earlier this month to remember the victims and advocate for gun control.
“I feel like school shootings and just gun violence in general is something kids our age shouldn't have to go through,” says Harding High School senior Katherine Rivera.
Many other March For Our Lives events will be held throughout the state Saturday, including rallies in Shelton and Stamford, and a candlelight vigil in Westport Saturday evening.
