There are new concerns about the safety and reliability of the Bayville Bridge going into the busy summer season.

Construction work on West Shore Road, which was damaged during Superstorm Sandy, had the main route to Oyster Bay closed for most of the day, and frustrated drivers say the Bayville Bridge keeps getting stuck in the open position.

Deputy Mayor Joe Russo says the village had a meeting with Nassau County Monday. He says engineers figured out the issue with the bridge, and the parts have been ordered and repairs should be done by the June.

The county says a complete overhaul of the bridge is expected to get underway in 2019. Construction crews are on track to finish work on West Shore Road by next spring.

Businesses on the Bayville side of the bridge, such as a Gulf gas station, say their bottom lines are being affected by the road closures and bridge issues.

"Business is down by about 40 percent," says Robert Keller, of Bayville.

Residents wanting to know more about the state of the project can sign up for the village's e-blast system, which will provide notifications on whether the bridge is operational.
