Students at Comsewogue High School in Port Jefferson Station are organizing a massive amount of donations they received to help victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
The donation drive, which is still open to the community, has amassed a plethora of water, diapers, canned goods and foods over the past few days. United Airlines has agreed to fly the supplies to Puerto Rico.
Paloma Blatter, a sophomore, said they would be accepting donations Friday night and Saturday. The school is located at 565 N Bicycle Path in Port Jefferson Station.
"The teachers here really opened our eyes," said Paloma Blatter. "We usually don't have the opportunity to do something that really has an impact, but they gave us that opportunity."
The outpouring of generosity is happening across Long Island. Crews at Republic Airport in Farmingdale earlier were loading up much-needed medical supplies onto a private jet. The medicine was donated by the AFYA Foundation. Andy Plesser, of Great Neck, has a home in Vieques, a remote island off Puerto Rico, and is helping bring the medicine.
Over at Mitchell Field, the Cosmos were on Long Island to announce they're giving half of Sunday's ticket sales to help with relief efforts in Puerto Rico.
