A community pulled together Tuesday night for a Medford teenager who's battling cancer.

For the past two years, 16-year-old Sean Dixon has been enduring an uphill battle against a rare form of bone cancer. Friends tell News 12 he's in grave condition and recently entered hospice care.

"We're hoping for that miracle," said Talia Mochi-Cliffe, of Medford. "Nobody wants to give up hope. He's a fighter."

News 12 first reported on Dixon in August, when he was sworn in as an honorary member of the Suffolk County Police Department. He was all smiles that day as he saw his boyhood dream fulfilled.

"I'm excited to see what it's like," he said at the time. "I've never experienced anything like this."

Dixon's can-do spirit made an impression with Suffolk's top brass, but his courageous fight against cancer made him a hometown hero long before then.

"I call him my sunflower, because even in the darkest days he stands tall to see the light, and I know that nothing will ever change that," said Emily Kiechlin, Dixon's girlfriend.

Only a handful of people were initially expected at Tuesday's vigil. But word about Dixon's condition spread on social media, leading to hundreds of people showing up, many of them with hopeful messages for him.

"I want him to know that all of us are always behind him and his family, and that he's never alone," said Brittany Lee.
