Coma patient to be transported from St. Thomas to LI
A Ridge woman whose daughter was struck by a car and left in a coma on an island hundreds of miles away learned today that she'll be able to bring her daughter home thanks to the help of a Long Island congressman. For the past six months, Kelly Breem has called the paradise island of St. Thomas home, but two weeks ago, the 34-year-old woman was hit by a car while crossing the street. Breem's mother, Althea Richardson, didn't find out about the accident until a week later since her daughter didn't have any identification. Breem now needs to be flown back to the U.S. for treatment, but she doesn't have medical insurance. The family contacted Rep. Timothy Bishop (D-Southampton), hoping that he could help bring Breem back to New York. This afternoon, Bishop's office announced that it was able to get the air ambulance company Angel Med Flight, of Scottsdale, Ariz., to fly Breem home for free. Once she arrives on Long Island, Stony Brook University Medical Center says it will take over Breem's treatment.Meanwhile, Breem's relatives say they still haven't received the official accident report and are suspecting a cover-up.
