The recent blast of freezing temperatures could cause major problems for farmers and wineries in Suffolk County.
There have not been reports of any damage to crops due to the cold, but several local farmers tell News 12 that there could be problems if the nights remain in the single digits.
East End farmers say even a small loss of crops could threaten the ability of some of them to survive.
While the prolonged freeze preserves the soil and kills many pests that would normally emerge in spring, the cold could kill fruit trees and grape vines.
"If you prune and you get a real cold spell, you'll wipe out your crop," says Christine Davis, of Davis Peach Farm.
Suffolk is the No. 1 agriculture county in New York state.
